5. Color consistency: Achieving consistent color temperature and color rendering across multiple COB LED chips can be more challenging compared to SMD LEDs. This can result in variations in color between different COB modules or batches.

It is important to weigh these disadvantages against the advantages and consider the specific requirements of the application when choosing COB LEDs.

Feature of COB LED Chips

Electrical stability, scientific and reasonable circuit design, optical design, and heat dissipation design.
The use of heat sink technology ensures that the LED has an industry-leading heat lumen maintenance rate (95%). The lifetime longer than 50000Hrs.
It is convenient for the secondary optical matching of the product and improves the lighting quality.
High color rendering, generally COB Chips RA more than 90. Uniform luminescence, no spot, healthy and environmentally friendly.
Simple installation, convenient use, reducing the difficulty of lamp design, saving lamp production processing and subsequent maintenance costs.

Different color rendering index (CRI)

The color rendering index of most SMD led chips on the market is generally 70-80, and some brands have CRI90 options, such as Osram SMD2835. Most of the COB chips are above CRI90, even up to CRI97. This is also a good color rendering index. This is the reason why indoor commercial lighting with higher index requirements often choose COB led lamps.

What is the difference between COB and SMD chip?

1. The production process is different.

SMD: The LED chip is fixed on the pad of the lamp bead holder with conductive glue and insulating glue, and then welded with the same conduction performance as the COB package. After the performance test, it is encapsulated with epoxy resin, and then the light is split, Cutting and taping, transport to the screen factory and other processes.
COB: The LED chip is directly fixed on the soldering pad of the lamp bead on the PCB board with conductive glue and insulating glue, and then the conduction performance of the LED chip is welded. After the test is completed, it is encapsulated with epoxy resin.

2. The luminous effect is different

SMD: The light-emitting surface of the SMD LED chip is scattered and there is glare
COB: The viewing angle of COB is large and easy to adjust, and there is no glare.
Generally, The Led lights with COB chips have uniform and round spots, no astigmatism, no black spots, and no shadows; while Led luminaires with SMD chips have bright spots in the middle of the spot, halos on the outer edges, and uneven light spot transitions. You can refer to this difference about COB LED Downlight and SMD LED Downlight.

How is COB LED Strip Made?

1. Substrate: The process begins with a high-quality substrate material such as aluminum or ceramic. The substrate provides a solid base for the COB LED chips.

2. Die Attachment: The LED chips, also known as dies, are attached directly to the substrate using a die bonding material, often epoxy resin. The dies are placed closely together to form an array.

3. Wire Bonding: Thin wires, typically made of gold or aluminum, are used to establish electrical connections between the individual LED chips and the external electrical contacts. This process is known as wire bonding.

4. Encapsulation: Once the chip attachment and wire bonding are complete, the COB LED chips are encapsulated to protect them from external elements. The encapsulation material is usually a clear or diffused epoxy resin that provides mechanical protection and enhances light diffusion.

5. Phosphor Coating: In some cases, phosphor coatings may be applied on top of the COB LED chips. These phosphor coatings help convert the blue light emitted by the chips into a broader spectrum of colors, producing a more uniform and desirable light output.

6. Wiring and PCB: To facilitate electrical connections and provide control, wiring and a printed circuit board (PCB) are added to the COB LED strip. The PCB typically includes traces and solder pads for power input, signal control, and any additional features like dimming or color control.

7. Protective Cover and Mounting: Finally, a protective cover or lens is often applied to the COB LED strip to provide further protection and to help control the direction of light output. The strip may also feature adhesive backing or mounting options for easy installation.

COB LED Strip with 24V Power

COB LED strips can be designed to operate on various voltages, including 24V. When using a 24V power supply, it is important to ensure that the entire LED strip is rated for that voltage. COB LED strips that are designed for a 24V power supply will typically have LEDs connected in series sets of two or more. This allows for a higher voltage drop across the LED chips, allowing them to operate at a higher efficiency and producing more light per watt of power consumed.

To power a COB LED strip with 24V, you need a 24V DC power supply that can provide sufficient current to meet the power requirements of the LED strip. The power supply needs to be capable of providing enough wattage to the LED strip without being overloaded. The wattage required depends on the length of the LED strip and the type and number of LEDs used.

It is recommended to use a constant current power supply with a voltage range of 22-26V to power a COB LED strip with 24V. This ensures that the LED strip receives a consistent current, which is necessary for optimal performance and longevity of the LEDs.

Before powering the COB LED strip, make sure to double-check that the voltage rating of the LED strip matches that of the power supply to avoid damaging the LED strip. Additionally, follow proper installation and wiring techniques to ensure that the LED strip operates safely and reliably.

It's worth noting that the manufacturing process can vary between different manufacturers and specific LED strip models. This is a general overview of the process to give you an understanding of how COB LED strips are typically made.

Conclusion:COB LED strips are a versatile and innovative technology that are changing the way we think about LED lighting. Whether you're looking for a more energy-efficient lighting solution for your home or a reliable lighting source for your business, COB LED strips are an excellent option to consider.
