How to choose a LED strip light

In our communication with many customers, we found that many customers do not know what led strip lights they need. Here is a brief analysis for you from several aspects:

1. Voltage selection:

For led strip lights, it is usually divided into high-voltage 110v/220v and low-voltage 5v/12v/24v. First, you need to determine whether you need low-voltage or high-voltage. Low-voltage led strip light need to be used with a power supply.

Led strip light has many kinds of color temperature, single color, double color /RGB /RGBW /RGBCCT etc., according to your needs, determine the color of the led strip light

Single color is usually used for lighting, and colored ones are mostly used for decoration. The colored led strip light needs to be equipped with a controller to realize its function.

Choose the appropriate waterproof level according to the installation position of the led light strip. For example, use in a humid environment requires a minimum ip65 waterproof. For outdoor use, at least ip67 waterproof is required.

5. Brightness selection

The brightness of LED strips is usually measured in lumens. The higher the lumen, the brighter it is.

This is also a very important point. The price of led strip light in the market varies greatly, and the performance of the products used for different prices is also different. So please determine your budget and choose the led strip light that suits you according to the above aspects

Generally, LED light strips produced by regular manufacturers use SMT chip technology, using solder paste and reflow soldering technology. Therefore, the solder joints of LED light strips are very smooth, the amount of solder is very small, and the solder joints are arc-shaped. The solder joints of inferior LED light strips are uneven, with many layers of dots covering the solder feet, which affects the aesthetics.


8. FPC quality

FPC has two types: copper-clad and rolled copper. The copper foil of copper-clad board is convex outward. The rolled copper is connected to the FPC and can be bent at will without the pad falling off. If you bend the copper plate, the pads will fall off.


9. Check the cleanliness of the surface of the LED strip

The SMT process light strips are very easy to clean, with almost no impurities and stains visible on the surface. If you hand-weld the light strip, no matter how you wash the surface, some stains and cleaning marks will remain.


10. packaging

Regular manufacturers' light strips are packed in anti-static reels, usually in rolls of five meters or ten meters, and sealed in anti-static and moisture-proof packaging bags. In order to save costs, low-quality light strips use packaging bags that do not have anti-static or moisture-proof packaging, so the quality is not guaranteed.


11. labels

The light strips, packaging bags and reels produced by regular manufacturers have printed labels, but they are not printed labels. Inferior light strip labels are printed and have different parameters.

How to solve the problem of LED light strip flickering


1. Replace the power adapter: If the power adapter has insufficient power or poor quality, it may cause the LED strip to flash frequently. An appropriate power adapter should be selected or replaced with a high-quality adapter.


2. Install capacitors: Installing capacitors on the power lines of LED light strips can reduce voltage fluctuations and thereby reduce stroboscopic phenomena. It is generally recommended to install a 1000UF capacitor.


3. Replace the LED light strip controller: If the controller is of poor quality or does not match, it should be replaced in time and ensure that the new controller matches the specifications of the light strip.


4. Check the light strip connection problem: poor contact or unstable connection of the light strip may also cause flickering. The wiring should be checked for tightness and reconnected.


5. Adjust the drive circuit parameters: The drive circuit is responsible for controlling the brightness and flashing of the LED strip. By adjusting parameters in the drive circuit, such as brightness, contrast, frequency, etc., the possibility of stroboscopic occurrence can be reduced.


6. Replace the LED light strip: If the LED light strip itself has quality problems, it may be necessary to replace it with a new one. Note that the new light strip should be the same as the original product.


7. Adjust the parameters of the playback software: If there is a problem with the playback software, you can try to adjust its parameters to reduce the possibility of stroboscopic occurrence.


8. Adjust light control parameters: Some LED light strips allow users to adjust light control parameters such as brightness, contrast and frequency. It may be helpful to know exactly how to adjust the light control parameters.


9. Replace the ballast or driving power supply: If the LED light flashes frequently, it may be that the ballast or driving power supply used is of poor quality, and a suitable ballast or driving power supply should be replaced.


Installation method


1. Indoor installation: LED light strips are used for indoor decoration. Since they do not have to withstand wind and rain, the installation is very simple. Take the LED light strips produced by LEDODM Lighting as an example. Each LED light strip has self-adhesive 3M double-sided tape on the back. During installation, you can directly peel off the sticker on the surface of the 3M double-sided tape, and then fix the light strip where needed. Where to install, just press it flat with your hands. If some places require corners or a long range, you only need to connect the LED strips in series and parallel in a group of 3 LEDs, because every 3 LEDs can be cut off and used individually.


2. Outdoor installation: Outdoor installation will be exposed to wind and rain. If 3M glue is used to fix it, the 3M glue will reduce its adhesion over time and cause the LED light strip to fall off. Therefore, outdoor installation often uses card slots to fix it and requires cutting. The cutting and connection methods are the same as indoor installation, except that additional waterproof glue is required to consolidate the waterproof effect of the connection points.


3. Power connection method: The general voltage of LED light strips is DC 12V, so a switching power supply is required. The size of the power supply is determined according to the power and connection length of the LED light strips. If you do not want each LED light strip to be controlled by a power supply, you can purchase a relatively high-power switching power supply as the main power supply, and then connect all the input power supplies of all LED light strips in parallel (the wire size is not enough, you can extend it separately) to unify Powered by main switching power supply. The advantage of this is that it can be controlled centrally. In addition to the inconvenience, it cannot realize the lighting effect and switch control of a single LED light strip. The specific method to be used can be measured by yourself.


4. Controller connection method: Addressable LED strips and RGB full-color strips require a controller to achieve changing effects, and the control distance of each controller is different. Generally speaking, the control distance of a simple controller is 10~15 meters, the control distance of a remote controller is 15~20 meters, and the longest distance can be controlled to 30 meters. If the connection distance of the LED light strip is long and the controller cannot control such a long light strip, then a power amplifier is needed for tapping.


5. Pay attention to the connection distance of LED light strips: Generally speaking, the longest connection distance of 3528 series LED light strips is 20 meters, and the longest connection distance of 5050 series LED light strips is 15 meters. If this connection distance is exceeded, the LED light strip will easily generate heat, which will affect the service life of the LED light strip during use. Therefore, installation must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements, and LED light strips must not be operated under load.
