What's COB LED Strip?

COB means Chip on Board, therefore COB LED Strip is a type of LED strip that packs numerous tiny flip-chips directly mounted and encapsulated on a flexible printed circuit board, then coated with a yellow encapsulation glue mixed with phosphor. COB LED Strip can emit different colors and color temperatures by chips undergoes refraction, reflection, and interaction with the phosphor. This innovative design produces a continuous, uniform dotless led strip light without visible individual light spots or dark gaps between diodes. As a result, COB LED strip lights are also known as continuous led strip light or dotless led strip lights.

  • Uniform Seamless light without visible dots

    One of the biggest complaints about traditional SMD LED strips is the lighting dot or dark area throughout the strip. A dark area is visible that the human eye cannot ignore because there's no light between two leds. It often happens even if there's aluminum profile cover. Light is more soft and attractive when it looks like a smooth light source rather than a lighting dot mess. This is the most significant advantage of COB LED Strip. Designed with hundrends of chips inside, Flex COB Strips provide uniform "a line" light without any visible dot or spot, even if there's no aluminum profile cover. COB flex strips is ideal for applications where cannot be hidden or diffusion cover distance is very close
  • Wider beam angle 180 degree

    SMD light strip luminous angle is 120 degrees, while the COB led tape light luminous angle is 180 degrees. COB strips typically provide an exceptionally wide beam angle of up to 180 degrees. This ensures even light distribution across surfaces, eliminating dark areas or shadows between light points, which is a common issue with spaced-out SMD LEDs.
  • Flexibility and Durability

    COB led strip lights are much more flexible than other flexible strips because of the small size of the diodes and the uniform weight distribution. These diodes are so small and closely spaced that no point of the strip is the same. This uniformity makes it easy to set up the strips without planning around a 5050 SMD LED sticking out where you don’t need it. This extra flexibility will make it easier for them to fit into tight areas and turn corners in your application.

Automated Manufacturing for COB Strip

  • Step 1 Die Expanding

    The first step in COB led strip production is die expanding. A completed semiconductor wafer, containing thousands of tightly packed LED chips, is adhesively mounted onto a special UV-tape or blue tape, which is stretched and fixed onto a metal ring frame.
    This tape is then mechanically stretched (expanded). The stretching action creates precise, uniform gaps between each individual die that were previously touching each other on the wafer.
    This "expanded" setup allows the die attach equipment (e.g., a pick-and-place machine) to accurately pick up a single die at a time without colliding with or damaging adjacent ones.
  • Step 2 Solder Paste Preparation & Printing

    Solder Paste Preparation>>>the solder paste (a mixture of tiny solder particles and flux) is removed from refrigerated storage (typically 2-10°C) and allowed to thaw and acclimate to room temperature for a duration of 4-8 hours, as specified by the manufacturer. Mixing (or stirring) is then performed to achieve a uniform consistency, ensuring excellent printability and preventing defects.

    Solder Paste Printers>>>A stainless steel laser-cut stencil is precisely aligned over the FPCB. Thawed and mixed solder paste is applied on the stencil. A squeegee blade moves across the stencil, forcing the paste through the apertures ( openings) and onto the pads below. 

    Solder paste printing is the industry standard for high-volume, high-density, high-quality COB LED strip manufacturing due to its speed, consistency, stability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Step 3 Die Bonding for COB Chips and Resistors

    Die Bonder‘s high-precision ejector needle or a pick-and-place head picks up a single, microscopic die chip or resistor and then places it onto the predefined solder paste deposits on the FPCB with utmost accuracy. The surface tension of the solder paste temporarily holds the die in place before the reflow process.
  • Step 4 Reflow Soldering

    The FPCB, now with the precisely placed COB chips and resistors, will enters a reflow oven. The board passes through several carefully controlled temperature zones.
    Preheat Zone: The board and components are gradually heated. This activates the flux in the solder paste to clean the bonding surfaces and prevents thermal shock.
    Soak Zone: The temperature is stabilized to ensure the entire assembly reaches a uniform temperature, allowing the flux to fully remove oxides from the metal surfaces.
    Reflow Zone: The temperature rapidly rises above the melting point of the solder alloy. The solder paste melts (reflows), becomes liquid, wets the component terminals and PCB pads, and forms a metallurgical bond.
    Cooling Zone: The assembly is cooled in a controlled manner. The solder solidifies, permanently fixing the components in place and forming solid solder joints.
    This process is essential for creating the electrical interconnection between the LED dies and the circuit traces on the FPCB. The quality of the reflow profile directly determines the strength, conductivity, and long-term reliability of the thousands of solder joints on a COB strip.
  • Step 5 In-process Test

    To identify and rectify any defects (such as short circuits, open circuits, or faulty components) that may have occurred during the previous manufacturing steps, ensuring that every COB LED strip meets its specified electrical and functional requirements.
  • Step 6 Phosphor-Encapsulant Preparation and Dispensing

    To achieve white light emission by converting the blue light from the LED chips through wavelength conversion using a phosphor mixture, and to simultaneously protect the fragile COB circuits. This process precisely determines the final lamp's Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) and color rendering properties.
  • Step 7 Curing Oven

    After the phosphor-encapsulant is dispensed onto the COB strips, the strips are carefully transferred into a curing oven for 2hours, transforming it from a liquid or gel state into a solid, durable, and transparent protective layer.
  • Step 8 In-process Test

    To identify and rectify any defects (such as short circuits, open circuits, or faulty components) that may have occurred during the previous manufacturing steps, ensuring that every COB LED strip meets its specified electrical and functional requirements.
  • Step 9 Automatic Machine for Adhesive Tape

    Automaic machine will aligns the 3M double-sided adhesive tape precisely with the back of the flexible COB strip PCB
  • Step 10 Customized Length per request

    our workers will cut cob led strip into different length, which requested by customers.
  • Step 11 Aging Test & QC Test

    Aging Test
    100% of the finished COB strips that have passed all previous tests are powered on and placed into an aging room for 4hours to check if any failures

    QC Test
    Visual Inspection: Checking for uniform illumination, absence of dark segments, color consistency, and physical defects like bubbles or contamination in the encapsulant.
    Basic Electrical Test: Verifying that the cob strips draw current within the specified range and do not short circuit.
    Photometric Check: Assessing whether the light output, color temperature (CCT), and chromaticity meet the required specifications.


  • Step 12 Package & Shipping

    After cob strips are passed all the test, our workers will pack it into the carton and transported to finished goods warehouse. Now our cob led strip is waiting for shipping agent's pick up.

Reliability Test for COB Strip

  • Functional Test: Electrical performance, Light efficiency performance, Color performance

    Function test used for cob led strip lights as below.
    Electrical performance>>>Use Electronic Load or Multimeter to connect cob led strip to the power supply and adjust the voltage to the rated voltage, after the product working is stable, record the current and power data.
    Light efficiency performance>>>Put cob led light strip into the integraing sphere and input with rated voltage, start the test and record the test data.
    Color performance>>>Put cob led tape light into the integraing sphere and input with rated voltage, start the test and record the test data.
  • Reliability Test: Longitudinal Twisting test, Bending &Winding test, Wrestling Test, Switching cycle test

    Reliability Test for cob tape light as below
    Longitudinal Twisting test>>>Install a 1.0meter long cob led strip on the test bench, light the sample, the test torsion angle is 720 °, turn it forward 720 ° and then reverse 720 ° twice, and repeat the torsion 5000 times according requirements.
    Bending &Winding test>>>Install 1m long cob led strip on the test bench, fix both ends on the fixed base of the test equipment, and wrap the sample to the  electrostatic rod for one round, and straighten it horizontally to light up; The test speed is 180mm/min, and the continuous cycle test is 5000 times. 
    Wrestling Test>>>Install 1m long cob strip light on the test bench, the test speed is 60times/min,and the continuous cycle test >5000 times.   
    Switching cycle test>>>A steady state test of the photometric testing according to the IES LM-79 before and after the test. At normal temperature ,5 seconds on, 5 seconds off for 1 switch cycle, continuous cycle test 25000 times.  
  • Environmental Test: Temperature rise test, Thermal Shock test, Temperature Cycling test

    Environmental Test for cob led strip as below
    Temperature rise test>>>Test at normal temperature, monitor the temperature of components at the front end and rear end of 1m cob led strip sample (record front-end luminous colloid surface, PCB pad surface, rear-end PCB pad surface, rear-end luminous colloid surface,ambient temperature).
    Thermal Shock test>>>A steady state test of the photometric testing according to the IES LM-79 before and after the test. Put the test cob strip sample to low temperature-40℃ for 15 minutes. and then convert the test sample to be exposed to high temperature 100℃ for a specified time of 15 minutes. withstand 200 cycles continuously.  
    Temperature Cycling test>>>A steady state test of the photometric testing according to the IES LM-79 before and after the test. Reduce the air temperature in the test equipment to the specified low temperature-40℃ at the specified rate and expose the specified time for 1 hour; then raise the air temperature in the test equipment to the specified high temperature 65℃ at the specified rate and expose the specified time for 1 hour.During the test, the product is in working condition and the specified time is 168 hours.  
  • Life Test: Luminous maintenance rate and Chromatically maintenance rate, Accelerate Life test

    Life Test of cob led strip as below
    Accelerate Life test>>>A steady state test of the photometric testing according to the IES LM-79 before and after the test. Put the test sample to high temperature 65℃ ,continuous maintenance of the specified time 336 hours, the product is in working condition during the test.      
    Luminous maintenance rate and Chromatically maintenance rate>>>Test temperature 55℃,85℃ or customer specified temperature. Test time≥6000hours,measure luminous flux each 1000hurs

Mono COB led strip light includes white, red, green, blue, yellow, orange, tiffany blue, mars green, pink and more. The color temperature of white light is 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, and 6000K, and the CRI is greater than 90. The width of PCB is 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 8mm, and 10mm optional. The density of chips is 320chips 480 chips 512chips 528 chips per meter. The voltage of cob led strip is 5V, 12V and 24V optional.
 

Cut-anywhere COB Dotless LED Strip

Cut-anywhere COB led strip light also called free-cut cob led tape light, can be cut without limited distance or pitch. The color temperature of white light is 2700K, 3000K, 4000K, and 6000K, and the CRI is greater than 90. The width of PCB is 5mm, 8mm, and 10mm optional. The density of chips is 400chips 480 chips per meter. Wide Light-emitting COB dotless led strip is a breakthrough in lighting technology designed to deliver seamless, broad coverage with dot-free illumination.  The width of PCB is 10mm, 12mm, 15mm and 20mm optional. The density of chips is 1152chips 1280 chips 1920chips 3072 chips per meter. The voltage of cob led strip is 24V only.
